That misnomer of calling a cylinder a disc is quite
common. Many people don't seem to know the difference.
To a good share of the public, the word "disc" simply
refers to any object with sound recorded on it
in the form of a mechanical groove.

The word "disc" is synonymous with something
being a record that can be played, 33rpm, 45, 78,
cylinder, whatever. To them it's all a "disc".

I've even encountered a few "highly educated"
folks who have made that same mistake.

Cylinder, disc, whatever. To them, they do not even
seem to be aware there's a difference in the shape.

Then, when the error is pointed out to them and
explained in detail and corrected, the response
is always the same old "cylinder, disc whatever".

Like they don't care. And true, most don't, and could
not care less what it is, nor how it works.

The perfect example of all that is wrong in cyberspace. Anyone with a cellphone can post their "expert" opinion.

I can't even imagine how this anti-methodology will corrupt the future knowledge base.
