Help identifying an early disc phonograph

Thanks! It's a cool machine... just wish I could figure out how to keep the gears from slipping. It plays great, but I don't want to damage it.

One of the things to check is the fiber gear on the brass spindle gear. Sometimes these gears deteriorate through age and wear and have to be replaced. Otherwise they won't mesh properly. Ron Sitko sells these gears.

Yes, your original picture did post just fine. What is needed now are some good pictures showing the details of the motor so that people can see what is going on and help you better.

Attached are 5 photos of the motor in this machine. The gears that seem to be slipping are the ones attached to the spindle. From what I can tell it's the gear that is gears on its face- if that makes sense... the one that meshes with the funny little gear on the spindle. When it slips, everything seems to slip. It spins normally for a moment, then the gears slip intermittently, making a grating sound and causing distortion in the spinning speed of the turn table. Not sure if these photos show what anyone needs to see or not.

From the look of it you have some mashed teeth on the helical gear - is it possible to post a close up of this area?

That's the motor I was remembering!

The brass bevel gear on the spindle shaft needs to be seated against the large drive gear or there will be slippage. Judging from the marks on the set screws, someone has been at work on this motor, and may have improperly adjusted it, or simply failed to properly tighten the set screw on the bevel gear.

Don't be afraid to adjust that gear AFTER the mainspring is completely unwound.

I had a beaded case model Talk-O-Phone, I remember it had those really finicky gears and shafts. Have to be very careful before working on them, making sure the maispring is wound all the way down. With some of these machines any shift in the parts can cause things to strip out and damage gears and the spring(s).
