I located the helical gear. It looks like there may be some wear on the teeth. I was able to adjust the slippage out of the gears by loosening the set screw on it and allowing the helical gear to drop and better mesh with the vertical gear it is driven by. Seems to be running smoothly now with no noise. Should the flat part of the helical gear that meshes with the governor be close to or sit on the vertical gear that it meshes with? I have it adjusted so that it's *just* above the gear. I don't want to cause any unnecessary wear to the parts with bad adjustment.

Those bevel gears can be the devil to adjust (from my experience with the BI and the Talkophone).

If there's a flat spot machined on the spindle, that's where you should align the set screw, to prevent it from working loose again.

But if your motor is running smoothly and quietly, I would say you've hit the 'sweet spot', and need not be too concerned about wear (with proper lubrication).

Bill, thanks! I'll have to check for a machined flat spot. I didn't think of that!

Stevel, I found the gear... and your photo worked this time. I wonder if Firefox doesn't recognize the tiff file type? Oh well, anyhow, it's working now! Thank you! I think I was able to adjust the gear to where it needs to be. The motor runs smoothly now, no gear grinding/slipping.

Very helpful thread - gives me some ideas to try on my Columbia BJ Imperial, which has a speed fluctuation in the motor: every couple revolutions of the platter. Looks to be a very similar motor to this one.
