WANTED: Delivery
Do any of you good people have access to dependable, reasonably priced delivery people for transporting bulky item such as phonographs in the Portland OR to Seattle WA area from door to door? Just a thought. It would make trading and selling a lot easier.I have never seen a reference to this.

Re: Deliveries
Actually posting your "wants" here is OK. Here is a thought....if you look on your local CL, you can find many people offering such a service and a great rates.
I needed an item picked up from our interior (about 5 hours away). I looked on CL in that town for anyone heading down to the city willing to bring stuff.
It all worked out just fine and only cost me $20....

Re: Deliveries
I drive from my home in Albany, Oregon to Union and back. I drive a ¾ to pickup with canopy and pull a tandem axle covered cargo trailer and haul for a core group of phono nerds. I take our things to sell and return with our purchases and we all share in the fuel expenses. One of the fellows lives in the Los Angles area. He pays a little more but I take his things when I travel to the APS sale in August. I would like to think that everyone gets good value for their fuel money. I have one friend that might only buy one packing tub worth of things one year but the next he might buy two uprights, a record cabinet and several horn machines. He has never complained when he bought very little and I've never complained when he's bought a lot. I've never had to tell anyone that there was not enough room for their purchases. I don't provide door to door service but I do make an effort to make it as convenient as possible. They, in turn, extend the same courtesy to me. I make it known that I haul to share expenses and not to make a profit. I make every effort to prevent losses but there is always some risk of theft, weather damage, or traffic accidents. The bottom line is the fact that I treat everything as if were my own. Several collectors live in the Seattle area. This July we are having an OTAPS meeting in Seattle and I'll deliver things there.
Driving to Union and back is expensive. I will burn over 700 gallons of diesel. A $100 bill gives me one tank full at current fuel prices. I occasionally run a thread in the Trader section offering to pick up or deliver items that might be on my route to or from Union. I enjoy traveling and meeting people. Chasing phonos has taken me into some very interesting places.
Handling and transporting phonographs is not just as simple as getting an eager guy with a strong back. I have a matching cabinet for a Columbia BY that's a good example. It came to me not only missing the door but part of the cabinet as well. The cabinet, where the hinges attached, was missing wood. It doesn't take much an expert to figure out it was hauled in a open pickup without securing the cabinet door. It was ripped off!
Be cautious, you get what you pay for.

Re: Deliveries
Hi Jerry,
Since I live in Olympia, do you think if I buy that c19 you're talking about that we could make a deal to bring it to me in July? I would, of course, pay you before then.
Thanks,
John

Re: WANTED: Delivery
There is a network of collectors all over this country made up of people that know how to handle talking machines. Most importantly, these people care about preservation and passing these things to future generations. I recommend the use of this network. Jerry
