Slightly Off Topic - Is This a 78 rpm Record Cabinet?

Post by gemering »

I was given this cabinet recently and told it was a record (as in 78 rpm) cabinet.
I am skeptical.
I think it may be some type of file cabinet for?
Any thoughts?

It does indeed appear to be a disc record cabinet.

It's a very attractive cabinet. Was walnut a more common choice of wood for English or Continental machines? I'd find a machine that matched your cabinet and you'd have a show piece. Jerry

Gene, That cabinet looks like wonderful flaming mahogany. I see the ad lists them as mahogany. It seems they were offered in oak as well.
Great find... ;) .

I have seen that once before and I'd like one gifted to me! ;)

Is the back, interior wall of the cabinet covered in felt ?

Look inside with a good flashlight, and see if you find series of horizontal lines / scratches from records hitting the back wall if the door was closed hard... ;)

It is a lovely piece !

How does it operate? The ad seems to imply a damped tilting, such that the records store horizontally, and are rotated with the door to a vertical position upon opening the door downward. The "slowly" comment makes me wonder whether there's something to prevent the whole heavy mess from slamming forward and maybe even toppling the whole thing over.

But it could just as easily be that the door opens downward and the record storage part slides out onto it like a drawer.

So what is it, please?

Certainly is a record cabinet. Here is a link for an advertisement for it. Gene, your cabinet should hold 150 records either 10" or 12". That should be a keeper for you. Would look great with a nice machine on it.
