Quartet from Rigoletto, True Tone.

Post by larryh »

Been fairly busy these late winter days putting up videos. Some come out better than others. I know some of you out there are Opera lovers, my diaphragm seems to capture them about as well as I could expect. A far cry from when I couldn't get any loud vocals, especially opera to come though clear. I find this Quartet to be a pretty good competition for the famous Victor version. I am a bit surprised at some of the names of the singers. Elizabeth Spencer! Who knew, I guess I need to check farther into her career. I know she was Edisons favorite from what I had read but didn't realize she was and operatic star as well.

And Arthur Middleton and Odette LeFontenay, pretty good singing for relative unknowns compared to the Caruso version! Good job and keep those DD's coming on Youtube. Any more hassles with the copyright police?

Edison recorded the Rigoletto Quartet twice. Larry's video is the later one from 1921.

Here's the earlier one from 1917:

BTW, Larry, how many plays are you up to now on that Bruce stylus?

No more issues with the copyright police so far.. I see that the record is viewed in other countries than here. The Bruce stylus I am using is the same test version I started with. around the 2,000 sides I began to see faint run off makings, some records barely at all, others more noticeable. After that I quit counting. But with all the records I have played creating new diaphragms as well as these videos and my usual daily routine of playing the chippendale in my moms basement while I walk a half hour in the morning I must be up to easily 3,500 sides by now. It shows no wear to the playing grooves to the eye at least. Why it started to leave some run off markings is hard to say. I have hit a few nicks and other hard to see imperfections as I go along which leads me to think that is why it started to leave a bit of light run off lines. Steven wants me to return it to have him look it over to see if he can see if I chipped it in some way but so far I haven't done that.

The first version of the Quartet is good as well. Slightly different with I am assuming some different voices? Who does perform on the early version?

Speaking of the Bruce Diamond Co., does anyone know why they disappeared and no longer respond to emails?

I posted this question to Steven this morning and got a fast reply.

"They did not disappear they are a large company and trying to get a large company to respond to a very small venture is challenging". Feel free to post the answer.

Steve

I have heard Steven mention that getting though to the person he deals personally with sometimes takes a while but eventually gets though. They are on track to produce a batch for this year from what I understand

I was wrong, Steven was talking about the original order when he mentioned the stylus for me. Not sure what this all is meaning at this point.
