Needed to adjust the diaphragm for better sound.

Post by larryh »

I have made over 250 videos now. Something I hear I don't like is too much reverb in the loud horns mostly. Its always been a problem that when you get ones that play really loud, which seems to always be what people want, you start compromising the tones of high instruments. I just pulled a video of the Kaplans Melodists playing Hello Blue Bird due to the overbearing sound. Many of the videos work fine with the volume level but others do not. I took a good snips that Steven sent me and reduced the size of the glued cap. That brought the volume down some and made the horns more tolerable at a high volume. The thing is that in my home particularly the louder volume is a problem. With the very same diaphragm and reproducer on the Jacobean I have a couple shots of the sound in my moms dining room, the volume is considerably less due to the different acoustics. When I set out to make diaphragms one of the things i didn't want was for the phonograph to run you out of the room, that doesn't make for fun listening to me. Trouble is every room is different as well. If anyone has a diaphragm from me that seems to intense on the upper range you might take a good snips and take an ⅛ inch or off the glue on the top of the rubber cap. Or a bit more if needed.

That didn't work well. In person the sound is much more manageable but on this video the same issues are there. Its pretty obviously the cameras automatic volume over playing the sounds.. Not much I can do with that unless I want to try to find something better!
