Although just a guess on my part, this glass tray appears to be either a change tray or just a little premium given by French dealers for the French market. Hard to tell the size.
Not too sure how old. However, it is a nice display piece...

Larry, I think it is a premium given away by a dealer in France to promote HMV over there. I think the new owner could use it for whatever function they want. Premiums ave very common here in the USA. RCA gave away a lot of premiums back in the day.
