Goody-Goody Song

Post by Phonofreak »

Last night, I was watching a classic horror movie: "What's The Matter With Helen" Starring Debbie Reynolds, Shelly Winters, and Dennis Weaver. It was released in 1971. Throughout the movie, they were playing the theme song, Goody-Goody. Who wrote it, when was it recorded, and is it available in 78 RPM? I can't get this song out of my head, and I'd love to find this on a 78.

It's a Johnny Mercer song:

The version I know best is actually Frankie Lymon's. I have it on a UK 78.

It's quite easy to find the 1936 Benny Goodman rendition on a scroll label.
My grandmother sung it all the time. "You rascal you!" :)

Thanks for the replies. Now I know what to look for. Since the song came out in 1936, was it also on a Bluebird label? I thought by that time the scroll labels were done with.

First issues of Benny Goodman Victors were on scroll or circle labels. After he went to Columbia, Victor reissued some sides on Bluebird. Look for Vic Scroll 25245; vocal by Helen Ward.

Harvey,
Victor kept the scroll label until 1937 when it was replaced by the ring or circle label. You'll see the RCA log on the bottom and the wording "Orthophonic Recording" dissappears. (even though this would return with with HIFI in a little over a decade). You will also notice the appearance of a run in groove in the late scrolls and the VE pressing mark is in a diamond (rather than an oval) noting RCAs new cutting head. :)

Harvey,
My Grandmother sang this song all the time :rose: and I've been thinking about it a lot lately so I posted the Benny Goodman scroll recording on youtube...

Very enjoyable. And I love the vintage Garrard turntable.

Not to be confused with "I'll be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You," in the classic Louis Armstrong rendition!
