This cabinet has a broken piece of molding on the door right at the Key hole. There is one on the right. Is there a way to mold that piece?

Yes there is. Get a tube of RTV Silicone rubber. You can use that for a mold. To make the mold, liberally apply Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly on the good part. That will keep the Silicone from sticking to the wood. Apply the Silicone over the good part making sure it is covered. Let dry over night. Then peel off the Silicone. Wipe off the Vaseline. Mix up a batch of 5 min epoxy and apply into the mold. Let dry for about 20 minutes so it is still flexible and remove from the mold. Wipe away any Vaseline residue off of the part. Glue part onto the cabinet. You may have to do some trimming of the part. When everything is dried and cured, them paint to match the color of the cabinet. I use Testors that you can get at any craft or hobby shop. I keep a stock of colors on hand. I use rubber(yes, it's a color that is a dark brown) brown, light brown, flat black, and tan. It's trial and error to get the right consistency, but with practice, it can be done.
Good luck,

I get the idea of making a mold, but that will give you a duplicate of the trim on the right, which curves in the wrong direction won't it?

The best thing to do is to take some modeling clay, apply it to the broken area, then sculpt it into a mirror image. Once you're satisfied with the shape, then you can make a mold off that and cast it in epoxy.

Re: Help make a duplicate
Couldn't I make the mold. Take that piece and make another and it would be the left side? Like having a whole piece that you cut in half. Right side and left side?

I don't quite understand: if you make a mold from the right side, the resulting casting will always be the same, no matter how many times the process is repeated....Amberola wrote:Couldn't I make the mold. Now I am confused Bill? Phonofeak explained it like that. But it would only be the right side. How do I use the right side mold to make a left?Lucius1958 wrote:I don't quite understand: if you make a mold from the right side, the resulting casting will always be the same, no matter how many times the process is repeated....Amberola wrote:Couldn't I make the mold. As above, the solution is to sculpt a mirror image and cast from that.
