Ellington's "Blues I Love to Sing": Questions on Takes

Post by Cody K »

I'm a bit confused as to the whereabouts of take 2 of Duke Ellington's Blues I Love to Sing, recorded in 1927. Does this title even exist on a 78?

Here's what's got me puzzled: Based on this YouTube video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZmuLa7rrKk - which shows the record being played as 21490, I recently bought a copy of Victor 22985, just assuming it would be the variant, take 2. Huh -- not so. It's the same take, stamped on the record as 1, as on 21490. Surprised by this, I went back and looked it up at the DAHR database, which confirms that there were two takes: http://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/m ... ve_to_sing , with the status of take 2 listed as "Hold". Take 2 (which is the much better version, in my opinion) exists on various LPs and CDs, etc. -- I've heard it many times since the '60s, but never on a 78.

So, my questions are: was take 2 ever released on a 78? And what's up with those tricky bastards at Victor assigning two release numbers to what is essentially the same record?

(Take 2 on another YouTube video, for comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rjEHiGilIA )
