Great Finds Today

Post by SonnyPhono »

I went to an auction today and thought I would share some of the crazy things that went on there. The listing mentioned 22 phonographs, but when I got there there were more like 30. To go with those, there were well over 400 cylinders, 95% of them in great condition with boxes and matching lids. There were many that had the original slips too. Not to mention the hundreds of diamond discs, 1000's of 78's and about 15 horns ranging from some that I have never seen before, all the way up to a 51 inch tall monster of a horn. (Went for 90 dollars.) It starts out slow as I wait for the phonos to start bidding. As the first Edison Standard was auctioned my heart dropped as a model D went for over $500, and was in poor shape. It was the same for most of them. The bidding was absurd. I managed to pick up one decent Standard that has a nice Diamond "B" reproducer, original Tiz-It, 2 and 4 minute gearing, and a nice crane and standard horn.

But here is where it gets crazy. Out of the blue, people stopped bidding on phonos and related items. There was just a couple of other collectors there and we tried to avoid bidding against each other and it was amazing what sold and the prices they went for. There was a small box of reproducers, all in great shape, that went for $30 for the whole box. I bought two from the winner, a type q in immaculate condition and a Model H with the matching original box. I gave him $10. (He wouldn't part with the shiny Model K though.) I picked up a nice cylinder cabinet made by the Pooley Co. and a nice wood suitcase phonograph that was sitting on top of it for $40. Picked up another record cabinet in great shape for $11. I also grabbed a near mint Edison A-100 and a VV-35 that doesn't appear to have ever been played.

Here is where things got a little out of hand though. A gentleman I was talking with drove from St. Louis to attend. So when he was interested in bidding on one of the dozens of record lots I stood clear of his way as, at this point, we were literally taking turns. He picked up a box of 30 Monarch records, one had a crack in it, for $30!! The very next box he bid on had the Diamond Disc sleeve for "Take Me Home Again Kathleen", (I think that was the title) but it had the wrong disc in it. Instead, there was a VERY fresh, near mint condition "Let Us Not Forget". He paid $25 for that lot! I picked up a box full of cylinders, all black wax, all with original boxes and lids, and all with mint slips. It gets better, by the end, I bought a couple horn cranes for a couple bucks each. I also paid a total of 4 dollars to pick up a VV-XI in oak, a Grafonola, a Sonora Model A, an Edison C-250, a Cheney No. 3, and a somewhat odd "Operaphone". They were all in very poor shape and couldn't be salvaged as they were in a barn for years and were beyond repair. So I grabbed the motors, tonearms, reproducers, hardware, and a boatload of other hidden "treasures" that I found inside the cabinets. There was a nice Columbia record duster from 1914, model "C" reproducer, a couple unused Edison oil jars, a really nice record repeater, two 78 attachments for DD machines, a couple nice catalogues from 1920, and two needles with the tips for playing Pathé records. I also grabbed the grills to all the machines all of which were near perfect with no missing or cracked pieces. (Including a William and Mary grille from an Edison Diamond Disc phonograph. On all of the things I just mentioned I payed about $25.

So I wrote this to spark other stories of crazy auctions people have attended. Whats the craziest auction you have attended? Outrageous bidding? Dirt cheap phonographs? Lets hear your stories!

:D Yea, there were several times when my heart nearly stopped too! It was like a roller coaster as I thought I would probably leave the auction with nothing due to the crazy bids. But then every one stopped bidding for some reason. Strange, but a lot of fun. A little off topic here, but has anyone ever seen a horn that appears to look exactly like a Gem horn, but about ⅓ the size? It had the same amount of panels, proportions and design but was only about 9 inches long or so and the bell was about 5 inches across. Was there a company that made these? Just thought I would ask.

in what part of the country was this?

even in this economy, that all sounds very strange - so many things all in one place selling for nothing.

It was in Laura, Ohio. There are pictures of just a portion of her collection at http://www.Auctionzip.com. She was a long time collector of many things, and I guess she was going to try to open a phonograph shop near Dayton but never did. Because of that, there were people there for other things, which probably helped out on the bidding once they had their share. That left the rest to about 5 of us who were the only phonograph collectors to take the rest. There weren't any ultra rare machines, (I'm guessing her kids may have kept those) but definitely rare records and some very unusual horns.

Wow, that was really something! Reading your report gave me almost the goosebumps. There must have been certainly several dealers around which restocked. Thanks for sharing this with us.

SonnyP- What a fun day! Sounds like you had a great time..

About a year ago I came across an IRS auction about 12 hr drive away. It said "phonographs" and had a picture of an Edison C-19, Ok but not really enticing. Also, it was on a Thurs so I thought attendance might be light.

I hadn't done much phonohunting lately and decided to take a chance. I also found a 2nd auction about another hour away and left a bid there on a fixer upper Amberola 75 that was supposed to be filled with records. I drove up and stayed overnight and arrived at the auction fist thing in the morning. There were about 10 phonos- the C-19, an Amberola 30, several off-brand floor models, two Victrola 4-3's, an Edison DD C-450 (missing turntable, crank, reproducer) and an Edison DD Chalet. As I hoped, not too many there, and one of the locals said they were all antiques dealers, no phono collectors. One thing, they took a bid prior to starting, on the whole room full. Then they started auctioning off each item individually. They said that if the total bid exceeded the single ones, we would have all wasted our time because it would all go as one lot. Yikes, that 12 hr drive looked like a bad idea.

The C-19 went for $85, not in great shape. The Amb. 30 for $250. I bid but wondered if there was a collector there after all. Next was the C-450. I started it at $10 and won for $20- now that was more like it!! I know it's a big wide console, but fairly rare so I was happy. The Victors went cheap but I wasn't sure I could fit them in my van so didn't bid. Right before the Chalet, they announced that the single bid was exceeded so we would take home our winnings after all! Yay! The Chalet was a hard fought battle... another bidder and myself in $1 increments! The auctioneer was a new guy who was doing this for the 1st time.. I won out for a whopping total of $52..

I loaded up and headed for auction #2, got lost and arrived late in the auction. Luckily, I had left a bid and got it for $125. My biggest expendure of the day... However, it really was filled with records, about 90 so I was pleased to shoehorn it in my van and head for home. The 12-hr drive wasn't so bad after all, even with a little rain.
