Edison Bell motor with a broken non return spring

hello , I have an Edison Bell motor with a broken non return spring, I can't see anyway to dismantle the winder , the winding gear has no visible pin to hold it to the shaft , I have tried unscrewing it , knocking it out from the centre , all my efforts seem to be damaging the gear

Anyone ever done one ?

Hi, I have no experience with this motor. The only intelligent suggestion I can make is to clean it as much as you can because under the grease it might be a dowel or pin hidden. If not the only other option I think is that it is screwed. For unscrewing it I will try to hold it with a vice padding the gear with two pieces of soft wood to avoid damaging it. Some gentle heating with a torch might help.

Sometimes if the spring is broken at the end you can unwind one turn and reconnect it.

Thanks for that but I have already tried it lasted about two winds , there isn't enough to pull out and twist

If it is the L shaped end that is broken, you have to push it back under the coil and pull it out the top (unwinding one loop). You should have enough to make a loop to get a good connection.
