HMV 157 (?) in Southern Ontario

Maybe our Euro machine experts can confirm if this is indeed a HMV 157?

It has a lovely oak veneer. Would this be similar in size and sound to a Consolette? or 4-7?

It has a bifurcated metal horn that takes up all of the cabinet space. It is not a re-entrant split into four conduits like the orthophonic horn. Nevertheless less the horn it has is much larger then a 4-7. For what they are asking it's quite a bargain. If you get it you may want to try a Victor orthophonic sound box instead of the HMV 5b. That's my personal preference.

The HMV Model 157 produces a good sound, but some collectors find the cabinet styling too plain.

The ad states that the crank is missing. What kind of crank should this machine have? Male, female, slotted?

It takes a male threaded crank.

Thanks, Barry. I took my Credenza crank for the audition and it worked perfectly.
On account of the damaged lid, the seller reduced the price to $100 so I took it home.
Overall, the lid is the only issue. Everything else is in top condition including the rest of the cabinet and pristine reproducer. It also has my favourite kind of motor: the strong, silent type.
Best of all, the sound is wonderful.

I have a 157, it's small but plays beautifully. It was listed on craigslist several years ago in my area, so I went for it. No regrets. All it really needed was a little TLC on the finish.

Yes, they are small machines. I was shocked when I saw it. It looks like it belongs more in a child's nursery than a living room but the sound is not small. Yours has a beautilful finish. Mine needs another treatment with Gojo tomorrow.
