Victrola's color

Post by Sohny »

Hi!

I would like to have your honnest opinion.
When I found my victrola, it was painted in beige with a metal paint. A very thick coat of metal paint.
The interior was dark mahogany. When I restored it, I stripped the entire machine to get directly onto the veneer. Then I applied a cognac colored dye, with two thin coats of clear varnish. The color is not exactly what I wanted it to be.

Say me, is this color is horrible? Should restart work with another color?

Thanks!!

Sohny

cognac? what did you want the color to be, and why wouldn't you have wanted it to be the correct mahogany to match the original finish on the interior???

It may be best to look at a Victor stain/finish chart to see what was offered on your mahogany model or as Brian wrote.....match the color inside.Cognac was certainly not a color offered by Victor.

I guess it's because he's not the expert that you guys are.

Sohny,

Yup, the color is off. If it bugs you then you should refinish it. A dark mahogany stain would be correct. There's a lot of nice dye stains available that will give you the deep mahogany shade that you need. Practice with dye stain first however and wear rubber gloves when you use it. It's not good to let it absorb into your skin.

Victrola's color chart? I didn't know :-(
I wanted it fit with my other furniture... And I made all the interior the same color.

I asked many people on internet for a few help... When it's not to sale pieces, nobody is there.
I done what I was able to do.

Well, at least I tried! :D

But many people doesn't like it... It makes me having doubts.

I will start over the color, but not immediately. I spent the last three months to restore it, and there is still work to do. This unit was heavily damaged when I collected it. He spent an entire year in the sand on the shore of the St. Lawrence River. This is a great survivor! :D

Somebody can say me where I can find this famous Victor's color chart?

Thanks!

I still think it looks great even though it's not the original color.

Hey:

It don't look bad. However, if you are like me, I would just restrip it and then do it in dark red mahogany.

I am not an expert, and have done refinishing which has turned out good. I say patience is the key.

You will learn alot on this forum

I never redo the inside of the lid. I am cautious of damaging the decal. If worst came to worst, there are replacement decals.
