Gene, You are my hero. Don't know how I did not see this listing till your posting on TMF, but thank you very much for doing so. I just bought it sight unseen. This is a bargain. The Victor ID tag says it's a Chippendale 500 serial number 527. I'm picking it up tomorrow. -Wayne

Congratulations! I think I saw a similar one at Jasper's mansion.

Way to go Wayne, congratulations. A very nice machine to add to any ones collection. Plus you can sell off all the extra reproducers and make it even a nicer buy.

Best Regards, Larry

Thanks ya'll. The small collection of reproducers is a nice bonus. There's apparently albums too but I'm not holding my breath on them being period model type. I'm not holding down my excitement either over this new collection addition. There is however, some knob or two issue, though I'm sure it's resolvable. I'm interested in seeing how VTMC indicated on the ID plate if it's electrically or crank wounded powered. With an X or VE or not at all? It's 10+ hours each direction to pick it up, so time to hit the road. Pictures compare this one with that at:

To be clear, the GOTHIC actually has more decorations that are cathedral like on the doors....

Which is irrelevant to this one's awesomeness.

I have the electric motored model of this same Victrola. Those lower doors (under the speaker) are opened only with the key in the lock. This wasn't the happiest design detail, especially since the doors (on mine) tended to stick now and then. Explains how that keyhole escutcheon went missing. See if the slender lock escutcheon is there with the machine in with any small parts. Mine has an electric compartment light instead of the second needle caddy. Great score on a lovely machine!

Mine only came with one album, it has a black fabric covering with silver letter on the spine. The record index also has a black fabric covering. For such a pretentious machine, one would expect bindings of fine leather.

The VV-Chippendale No. 500 is home, cleaned up, and sounds good with the attached Exhibition reproducer and will compare test with the nice No. 2 reproducer included, soon. No missing knobs but is short 2 of the 3 key hole escutcheons. Believe they all are the same, so I plan to someday make two from the one good one. Wasn't sure if electric or crank until I got there. There was no crank handle but there was the crank hole escutcheon and a 20's RCA on/off switch on the motor board. The windup motor was replaced with '20's Victor induction motor. I don't anticipate problems in returning these back to original. Along with this discovery prior to purchase, I notice one leg had been glued and another had a slender chunk glued back on. These prior repairs will need to be cleaned up, otherwise the wood and finish is near mint original condition. There were no Victor albums but did come with a Victor-Victrola.com official appraisal. Inspite that this appraisal does not mention the leg and foot repair or the motor conversion, it gives it a market value of $2700 low, $3500 medium, and (80% fall into the high) $4500 high. It also in this condition it is possible to get double the quoted price. It does mention that it doesn't have the original unique antique gold finish tone arm and reproducer, and would be a challenge to find one. After expressing my concerns, the dealer offered to lower the price to $1710 plus tax, so I took it inspite of the disappointments. Still very rare and I like it. I am however willing to give it up for a Gothic model. Need one to round out my very nice Gothic Pathé machine and Columbia Gothic cabinet mini collection. The paper label on the inside left storage area is entitled "Notice - Victrola Special:" and is dated April 14, 1918.

Just like to add that this machine has the Fable Piano Company made in Atlanta dealers decal on the inside lower part of the lid, and..

That the appraisal also stated that there are only 68 known Period Victrolas logged into the survival database, where 7 are Chipendales, of which 3 are wide bodies. So my machine is one of three. Pretty sweet.

The above machine did not come with wheels but looks like there are metal threaded holes in the feet. Can anyone provide a closeup picture of what the wheels look like on these very unique Claw on Ball feet? The claws have toe nails. Quite nice. Thanks. -Wayne
