OT: 4th of July with the Lauders

Post by martinola »

I'm a passenger train conductor by trade. I spend much of my time walking thru the train like Harry Lauder (very good for keeping your footing). I worked the train today (July 4) and noticed I had a group with the name of Lauder. Being a bit of a fan, I asked them if they were related. They replied that they were and seemed to be happily stunned that anybody would remember Sir Harry out here on the West Coast. I didn't ask for their pedigree but was mighty pleased to have them onboard. I hope everybody had a happy 4th of July!

Regards,
Martin

What an interesting chance meeting that was.

The Lauder clan might be stunned how many fans still exist around the world. I have loved his records for over 40 years. There is a lot of Scot in my bloodline, so I guess it figures. I love red-haired lassies and bagpipes too.

My Scottish grandmother was born in 1902, and lived past the age of 90. She spoke of seeing him perform in Glasgow as a girl and young woman, when she "had a spare copper" (extra coinage), and said he was extremely popular and put on a great show.

I used to phone her to get translations of the Glaswegian dialect I was hearing on my old Lauder cylinders.

Quiz question: Who here knows what "saftest" means?
