Fran,
Thanks again for the help, it is all very useful.
I am going to let it rest for awhile and take some time to decide whether or not this is really necessary and if it can be done without damaging the horn. I tried heating it last night and it would not budge.
Thank you also to George for posting all the pics and info, very much appreciated .
Mike

You're certainly welcome Mike, and after discussing this with George today, in person, I completely agree with his assessment of the problem. (He graciously took me to, and hauled back for me, a very late Chippendale C19 similar to yours today :) )

Best,

Ok Fran, and again, thank you.
This is my first 250 horned DD, all the others have the small horns, and I thought I did not like the Chippendale cabinet, but I was wrong. This is a very attractive cabinet, and all the record storage is great; I have loose Diamond Discs laying all over the place. The C-19 quickly became my new favorite DD in the short time I have had it, not even a month yet. It's a great machine and I am very happy with it. I don't know about you , but I like the late look with the gunmetal and orange turntable; something a little different.

Good grief - - now there are TWO of these guys...!

Mike, when Fran first saw a Chippendale at my house about 18 months ago, he was smitten. I had 4 of them here at the time, in various states of health. Well, 3 of them are now at Fran's house! I'm just grateful he let me keep one...

They really are nice machines. Stately, dignified, and monumental, without being too large. The best motor and horn that Edison offered, and of course the finest recording and playback system until the Orthophonic era. And there are enough of them around so that virtually all collectors with an interest can enjoy owning one. Best of luck with yours!

George,
Thanks George, you took the WORD right out of my mouth-----SMITTEN. I absolutely am :D I can't believe what I have been missing all this time ! The height of CHIPP is one of the nice things. At my height, 5 ½ feet, there is no bending over to crank, and the playing compartment is chest high ! Love it. I only bought it to get a 250 horn at a great price, and got swept off my feet by it.
The listening experience is incredible, and with a Dance or Edisonic, forget about it. I don't know about this alignment situation, not sure how I will proceed.

If Fran is around, maybe you should lock your doors
Thanks,
Mike

You guys are killing me!!

I have to agree with you, Mike, the metal finish is very pretty, I think.

Now, I have a question for you, if you don't mind: When I went to look at the C19 I brought home today, I immediately noticed that the grille was quite different to the others I have examined.

Both my ca.1916 Mahogany C 250, and my early 1919 Oak transitional C 19, have a one piece grille, produced from a single piece of laminated wood (that matches the cabinet, of course.)

The late (sn 172xxx) Mahogany C 19 I brought home today has a grill, with the familiar motif assembled from much thinner 3 ply laminate wood material, then mounted in an outer frame, fastened with ¼ round trim on the inside. Multi-piece construction as opposed to single piece construction.

The grilles are all placed within the cabinet horn opening in the typical manor.

I also noticed that the familiar "arches" in this grill are cut finer (only about 5/16" wide, as opposed to 7/16") than the older ones I have.

Is yours the same multi-piece construction as mine?

Below is a picture of both types, with the one from my late C 19 on the left, and my earlier C 250 on the right. The next picture is of the back of it.

Fran,
My grille is the two piece type, grille and outer frame. I have not yet seen the earlier versions in person, so thanks for this I would not have known otherwise.
BTW, the serial # for mine is 172,585. Are they sisters ?

Have to go to bed now,
Mike

Probably couldn't get much closer if we tried! Mine's #172249. Does yours have the bottom shelf numbered 37-72? I could check my database, but my PC is sleeping for the night.

Good night!
