Good Day for Cylinder Records

Visited an Antique Shop about 90 miles from my home town. Phonographs just an upright Victor an Early Edison Suitcase Standard rough shape. Had a Edison C reproducer. Not interested in the phonographs but asked about cylinders or 78 records. The owner brought out a box of cylinders and here is what I got. The down side of this trip is I bought a friend of mine that used to collect phonographs but not to into them now. We ended up with 20 Black Lambert cylinders. The down side is I had to share with my friend.

If you haven't played "Hooray For Bathens Bay" yet, do yourself a favor and listen to it. It's a really great Collins and Harlan title that I've never seen recorded by any other company, Arthur announces it himself and it's a really great title. Lamberts are always fun to find, I enjoy listening to my little hoard of them. The one you have there with the metal bands on the inside is actually an early Albany Indestructible, these also had raised lettering like Lamberts did.

Sean Thank You for your help. Yes I knew it was an Albany Indestructible I have four of them now with Original boxes. Does any one know when they stopped using the raised lettering?

The raised lettering on Albany Indestructible wasn't around for long, I believe for just about six months. I'm at work, so I can't consult Allan Sutton's book on them which may have a more accurate timeframe, if it was known. I've found a dozen or so of them over the years, they're certainly not very common.

I'll check my book later and see if it offers anything further.

Late Black Lamberts eventually morphed into Early Albany Indestructibles. The Albany Indestructible Company which was founded in Maine in 1906, but operated out of Albany, NY starting in 1907 would have used some of the Late Lambert "raised" letter moulds for some of their early Albany 2 minute Indestructibles. Albany phased out these "raised" letter Lambert molds in early 1907.

What you've found are some very rare late Black Lamberts. Nice find! We should all be so lucky! How you tell the difference is that the Albany moulds have the Metal rings, and the Late Black Lamberts do not.

Edison Collector/Restorer
