That was a great cartoon! Great music too. Poor Betty, Papa was sounding like a broken record and Mama changed his tune. While Betty was writing her note, another popular song, "Mean To Me" was playing.

Speaking of "kickin' the gong around" ( getting high on opium ), I've always wondered what (if any) recreational drugs inspired the gang at Fleischer Studios... definitely some surreal, if not down-right scary stuff came out of there, before they sold-out to Paramount, and Popeye & Co. got scrubbed-up and made "respectacle"...


The walrus-ghost dance is an example of early "motion-capture" animation, I believe known as "roto-scope"... they copied Cab's gyrations very accurately.

Good to know that the background music when Betty writes her farewell letter is "Mean to Me." That fact contemporary audiences would have known; not so today. Really adds to the appreciation. I have a recording of "Open the Door, Richard," which was a big hit in 1946. There is a Looney Tunes cartoon that features Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam. I don't remember the name of the cartoon, something like "High Diving Hare." Anyway, at one point, Yosemite Sam yells, "Open the Door!"He then turns to the audience (us) and says, "You notice I didn't say Richard?" When you pick up on the contemporary references, it's great.

As for that talking machine, I was somewhat shocked (shocked I say) when Papa's head turned into a cylinder player. That machine looks like a cross between a cylinder player and a VV-IV. I mean, really, the machine has an external horn. What are these two front doors for? Well, of course, for Mama to store the extra cylinder in so she can get it quickly.
