Neat Craigslist Find

Post by Oceangoer1 »

Picked up a Victor Orthophonic Colony today! It is the first version without the grille cloth and according to the serial number it was made in late 1925. I was intrigued by the fact that it was only produced for 2 years, so I snagged it! Pictures to follow very soon!

Unfortunately the brass reproducer is nowhere to be found! :( maybe it's hiding somewhere in the machine.

Here are some pictures, the lid is disconnected, but all the screws and the hinge are there.

Looks like a decent little machine... how is the top-surface of the lid ?

A little rough, just one veneer split.

I was playing around with the motor today (it is the cutest little thing). Its a single spring, and it was working. I let it wind down and then it stopped, so I cranked it back up and it made a loud shudder. I thought the spring broke, but I think it just slipped off its hook, since I let it wind all the way down. Either way, there is no tension when I wind it anymore! Good thing its a tiny motor!

Thought I would give an update on this machine! The cabinet is looking really nice, and I just have to correct that one color issue on the top. Internal parts are being cleaned at the moment.

That's a very cute machine! How's it sound, volume-wise?

I'm not quite sure as I've never heard it play. I'm was having some trouble getting the motor apart. A spring broke or disconnected

I will be sure to post a video as soon as it is playing!

As promised Fran, here is a sound test of the Victor Colony. Still have a couple joint areas I might need to seal, and I might need a way to color the silicone I used to seal the horn. Looks like a zebra! Soft tone needle used, which was loud enough to fill up the whole house!
