yeah but i get the same problem as with popcorn those things in your gums!

They use mica squares in Japanese Incense Ceremony as well- placed over a coal with a sliver of sandalwood or aloeswood on the mica, the heat from below warms the mica and thus the wood to release the scent without burning it.
You hold the vessel containing it up to your nose and take a deep sniff. I would think if it were dangerous Incense Ceremony practitioners would've died out fast!
