Happy Birthday, Paul!

Post by MordEth »

While I just finished sending Paul his birthday cards (he got two variants, because I could not decide which cover image I preferred), I wanted to start a thread on here so everyone can wish him a happy birthday, also.

In honor of Paul’s birthday, let me share this photo of Edison with a phonograph.

Happy birthday, Paul!

You’re very welcome. It’s the least I could do to get some Edison-related content up on your birthday...

...we can’t be Victor-focused 365 days per year. ;)

Look for some more Edison images in the vintage photographs thread; I have a few more uploads planned for you (and our other Edison fans).

I apperciate it very much. I know Bostonmike1 will be happy, since he likes Edison Machines too. You should also incude some Columbia machines as well. Since they made cylinder machines too.

A recent rare photo uncovered at the National Historic Site shows how Tom celebrated his birthday too.

Jack,

Was this while Edison was researching his inexplicably forgotten bottle-magnets?

It’s fairly impressive that he could manage to hold the bottle in such a manner. ;)

Dave,

I'm told that this was Edison's second generation bottle. You may remember that Edison produced a unique battery oil in those now popular small glass bottles. It's described as " a pure nonconductive oil that is added to the potassium-based electrolyte in old Edison nickel-iron batteries to reduce water loss due to excessive gassing..."

Tom used the same research to reduce "excessive gassing..." from drinking beer which gave the glass bottle a magnetic property allowing the drinker to hold the bottle without touching the Edison name.

On the other hand, there is evidence that the photo has been modified by a rookie  who is now learning how to use Adobe Photoshop!

Happy birthday Paul!

Regarding the interesting Edison pic. My understanding is that he toyed with an idea for something he called a "mug-o-beer" which was essentially a bottle with a tiny handle for holding the bottle. This occured in 1890. He spent the next few years experimenting, testing the concept, and consuming numerous bottles to try and perfect his idea. However, all other patents fell off to such a frightening degree that his associates sent him to detox and finally got him to abandon his idea and move on to other things!!!! Yea surrrre....

http://edison.rutgers.edu/patents.htm shows visual evidence of the above hypothesis.....
