Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys - a CD review

Post by Roaring20s »

It was a delight to have seen Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys at the APS banquet. After performing, Janet saw my Roaring20s name badge and presented me with her new CD and ask if I would be kind enough to share my thoughts on the forum. I noted that many attendees of the banquet bought the available CDs.

I will start by saying that she has all the bygone moves and expressions that make her stage presence an joyful experience. She’s made herself into a jazz age personality!

When listing to the CD it’s hard to visualize the depth of her spirit, but after you see a live, or a YouTube performance, you become aware that here’s a performer who meticulously enjoys her craft.

I like to hear what’s being sung, and she delivers well enunciated and punctuated lyrics effortlessly.

Onto the CD, “It’s the Girl” is the 8th by Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys. It’s a mix of song and instrumental, peppy and subtle music. The Parlor Boys music will keep you tapping as they complement what’s sung. Two original compositions blend there way into these old selections. It is easy to get hooked on this music. I’d give the CD a rating of a raccoon coat with a flying 'recommended' banner.

For fun, I’ve made this mock sheet music cover from a photo taken at the APS show. She sang this tune to the delight of the just fed crowd.

The videos crack me up! She is very entertaining to watch and her voice has such clarity and diction that you can understand every word. It was also amusing to see one of the musicians playing a Stroh violin.

Thanks for posting the info, I wasn't aware of her latest release. Janet is one of the exceptional jazz artists of our time. I have most of her albums and like them quite a lot.

Just bought the download version in glorious .flac, really nice songs and a somewhat better variety than the previous album. The first songs are nice bouncing in with a good rhyhtm, but still different arrangements. So, it never gets boring at all. The album theme song "It's the Girl" is highly well-put together.

Unfortunately, Janet's voice and some of the instruments are blasting occassionally throughout the whole album. It puzzles me how this was overlooked.

Nevertheless, I do absolutely appreciate her music.
