This past weekend, my Dad and I took a road trip to Knoxville to see a friend and collector Dave Gencay and his wife Kathy. Dave and Kathy were nice enough to pick up a VV-XIV for me this summer in NC as well as to bring a couple of horns back from Union for me. Dave and I also traded 2 machines and I cam home with a nice VV 8-9.
My question is, what albums are appropriate for the 8-9? I have searched the net and have not found a pic of one with albums installed. One reference book made note of the fact that "colorful" albums were available for an additional purchase price, but I have been unable to find a picture of such albums. Any help is always appreciated.
The trip this weekend also took me through Hermitage, TN (near Nashville) where I met 2 more of the nicest collectors you'd ever want to meet, Darold and Cathy Edwards. Overall, great weekend for collecting! Thank you to the Gencays and the Edwards.

Mattrx,
Very nice 8-9. Yours is s/n 730, mine is s/n 700. Close cousins! Mine doesn't have the albums either. Looking forward to replies as to what would be correct.

JerryVan, does yours have the green leather turntable or the gold felt-I have seen pics of both before-also wondering if my turntable is correct for the machine.

I've always liked those early XIVs, although never owned one. Looks like a nice 8-9 too. Great bring-backs!

Uncle Vanya wrote in my other thread today:
"Getting back to the 8-9, it uses four 10" and one 12" leather album."
I have seen 3 styles of leather albums lately. One dark brown with a round nipper logo in the center of the cover, one also dark brown with an oval nipper logo, and then one of a much lighter color (maroon to red) and similar to the first one with a round nipper logo. Not trying to be difficult, just accurate for my machine. Does anyone have knowledge of a machine that came with its albums and style/color they were?

Re: Successful Weekend and a Question About Albums for VV 8-
Matt,
Hope this might be of some help on the albums for the 8-9.
I have my great-grandmother's VE 8-12 X from 1927, with all of its original albums.
They are the dark brown "leather", with a heavily "pebbled" grain, and have the Victor dog & gramophone logo in an oval inset, centered on the front cover. The spines have a leather-wrapped D-ring for a pull, in the case of the 8-12, there are eight of them, lettered from A thru H ( in gold). A and B are 12-inch folders, the rest are 10-inch.
As far as I am aware, the colorful "library-spine" albums were supplied with machines where the album storage was exposed.
The albums you describe with the red covering ( with a linen-weave texture?) were probably more appropriate to your XIV. I think I have one or two of these with the logo in a circular inset, and the background is washed in a silver color ?
Those look like two very nice machines !
Congratulations !
Frank

Thank you Frank, barring any other information, I will go with the heavily pebbled (good description) dark leather albums with the oval logo. The reddish ones I mentioned are still leather, just a much lighter brownish red color and the "pebbling" is not nearly as pronounced. I had them with an 8-12 that I left with Dave.
Thanks again,
Matt

The heavily pebbled albums are library albums, mand were sold into the RCA era. The smoother albums were used through the entire Orthophonic period. Neither are leather.mmthey are covered in imitation leather paper. The only leather albums are the colored half- leather bound albums, which were original equipment on the 8-35 and 8-36, the 7-11, 7-26, 9-16, 9-18 and the RE-75. They were offered as a $10.00 option for the 8-9 which was otherwise sold without albums. The original Victor literature exhorts salesmen to push the sale of the albums,as they add much to the appearance of the machine.mattrx wrote:Thank you Frank, barring any other information, I will go with the heavily pebbled (good description) dark leather albums with the oval logo.
