Garrard Turntable Variations

Post by VintageSoundz »

Hello Folks.

I'm currently rebuilding a Garrard 1A (obtained from E-Bay in dubious condition but it's slowly getting there)!

I have two "ordinary" 12 inch turntables (with the bevelled edge) and both flop about on the spindle - top hole is too large. A video on U-Tube shows a machine with a 1A sporting a turntable with a flat edge. Am I right in supposing therefore that this motor takes a possibly earlier variant (with a smaller top hole), identified by the flat edge.
The 1A is one of Garrard's earlier editions so this would suggest that they modified for later model motors being fitted with a slightly larger spindle diameter. Also, a machine (again with the flat edge) has just been sold on E-Bay and this had a Garrard 11 motor fitted. Again an early version, modified by later 11A and 11Bs (which use the bevel edge).

Am I on the right track here, needing to source what might be a pretty rare fitment (I'm already having problems sourcing a suitable governer or springs to rebuild the existing).

Thanks in anticipation.

Dave.
