Re: Edison LP reproducer
Jerry gave me those two I have as examples of the Edison LP's. I really would not go after the records themselves. As for checking the stylus I wouldn't use one of my best DD's to do it.As I said,it'll fun trying them out.edisonplayer

Re: Edison LP reproducer
Saturday I got my LP reproducer. That evening I played my 40 minute by Anna Case.At the beginning of side 2(The Mocking Bird)several times the stylus jumped backward.Yesterday I played my 40 minute of hymns. That played better. In both cases I had to wind the motor towards the end.As we know, there were problems with Edison's LP system when it was new.edisonplayer

Glad you have it going. I never had a single record that would play without jumping the grooves as you put it. Probably the biggest down fall to them was they persisted in simply putting records in stock onto the longer sides so you could have the same selection that played with way more volume and tone by buying the single side. Its a fun thing to try out though.

That sounds like fun!
You're correct about possible problems, as you know, these systems are incredibly complex for their time, and can be temperamental.
I've recently begun an involved study of the entire mechanism in relation to the travel geometries and their respective alignments. The relationships between the horn, reproducer, turntable, and record need to be incredibly precise -- and those minute details need to be analyzed and correctly aligned for this system to play reliably.
There is a fairly involved procedure that includes a "horn alignment gauge" (complete with instructions) and the use of a "horn aligning bar". I find it all very intriguing! I have the horn alignment gauge, but I haven't come across an extant example of the aligning bar -- yet. I think I should be able to use my (perfectly) aligned C 19, with my horn alignment gauge, to take some very precise measurements to produce a replica bar for myself.
Maybe one day I'll be back in a position to produce replicas of both the gauge and the bar, but that's quite another story.

Make sure the phonograph is perfectly level, and that the weight pivot on the reproducer is moving freely (clean and lightly lubricated). Assuming there's a two-spring motor in there, it definitely should have no trouble getting through a side without winding, so make sure the motor is properly lubricated and running smoothly.

Re: Edison LP reproducer
I second those suggestions from PeterF. I need to clean and re-grease the springs in my LP console when I get around to it; the "thumps and bumps" are enough to cause a mis-track.
