Post by De Soto Frank »

This came-up in my saved-searches today...

Is this from a kiddie-phonograph ?

I believe it's from a Victor portable vv 2-35. One of their cheaper models. I saw one at an auction about a year ago. They have an all-metal case and usually painted green (!) in the inside and black on the outside. Rugged but not pretty.

The soundbox bears some resemblance to the short lived HMV No.16, a "sealed for life" component which could not be dismantled for repair. It was fitted to the earliest HMV 102 portables and the cheaper 99, but most have since been replaced with the later 5a or 5b soundboxes.

Similar to the HMV No.16 but the reproducer of the 2-35 is not sealed. In one of the pics we can see the slide-screw fastening allowing for the front to be twisted off.

I have two of the VV 2-35. They are rather cheap in the reproducer design and I'm glad to know that the reproducers can be disassembled. I want to do a complete restoration on one, although one of mine actually sounds very impressive as is. This would have to be my favorite portable phonograph (mainly because of that lovely teal color) :) They are almost identical to the VV 2-55, except for the tonearm.
