Vibrating metal sound in Edison diamond disc 78 attachment

Post by Caldog »

Hello,
I have acquired an Edison diamond disc 78 attachment. The only problem after I replaced the gaskets, and tightened a screw or two, is a terrible rattling sound whenever there is anything on a record in the low range. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Cal

Are the pivots adjustable? They could be too loose OR too tight.

I noticed that when I hold the reproducer at the top and bottom the rattling sound goes away. Also, the gaskets might be the wrong size...

From what I think to see is, that the center hole of the diaphragm (where the needle bar connects to it) appears to be open. Does the bar come loose when you (gently!) move it around?

If so, it should not bee a big problem to fix and would explain the rattling sound. Instead of properly transmitting the vibration to the diaphragm, it is just acts like a hammer.

It very much depends on the diaphragm type if there was/is a very tiny screw that is supposed to hold the bar in place and goes trough the diaphragm center. It could haven been also just a glued connection, but a screw or something like it is more probable. Usually a small portion of wax is then applied over the center hole to ensure air-tightness.

I usually use brown decoration wax (for decorating candles), which can be purchased in small sheets and in all different type of colors. It's very inexpensive. Unlike beeswax it does not crumble and will stay soft for years to come.
