Model B reproducer with Lead weight ?

Post by Gramtastic »

Hi, The reproducer that came with the Standard I posted about recently is a Model B but it has two screw holes in the front and an added lead weight. None of the images I have googled for the B show this lead weight. Any information on it ? I would like to get this restored and use it but would it be too heavy ?

I have posted some images of a model B reproducer I have with the same lead shim attached to the weight.
I have seen a few of these over the years with one example having the whole weight cast of lead.
The serial No of mine is B97922 and the top is pot metal.
Sorry about the cellphone photos, if you want clearer ones I will use my camera.

There is an article by Steve Medved in the March 2015 issue of The Antique Phonograph that illustrates and discusses the variations of the Model B Reproducer. In short, the B was supplied with the Gem until 1905, and was expected to play the Gold-Moulded Records with its ball stylus. The results were not as good as the Model C, so the lead weight was added around No.105,000.

There's much more information in the article. Steve is in the process of writing articles on all the Edison reproducers and publishing them in the APS journal.
