I hate Ebay sniping!

Post by cweastlick »

I was the only bidder on a reproduction elbow for a Victor I on Ebay. I set a fairly high maximum bid and with 3 seconds to go I got sniped by 88 cents!! They need to outlaw these things!

You lost because you didn't bid high enough, not because of a snipe bid. The snipe bidder had no idea what your max bid was.

Nope, it's all correct. His pre-established snipe bid was above your $75, and automatically countered it just before the auction ended.

That's life on eBay. Snipers will be snipers

When I bid on ebay, I put my absolute maximum bid. I've gotten outbid by a little as 5 cents, So be it. If it is meant to be, is meant to be. Ron Sitko has very nice reproduction elbows for $80.00. They are exactly like the originals. If you need one, I would get one from him.

I suspect the thing that is also frustrating cweastlick is that he got outbid by 88 cents which is less than the minimum increment of 1 dollar at this range. What many don't know is that the increment amount applies to the visible bid which in this case is 50 dollars and not the 75 dollars. I suspect the winner also wanted to only pay 75 dollars but added pennies to his bid precisely to avoid cweastlick's fate.

Sniping is great for those who don't want to get up and check your bid in the middle if the night but it does not necessarily save you either. I've sniped on more than one occasion and been outbid by a small increment, set a max bid at $100 for example and seen it go for $105! That's just how it works imho. :monkey:

I'll bet you're right. I don't know how many times this has happened to me (and probably everyone else in the world).

I kinda look at this the other way round: when I snipe (I do it "live" in real time) and win, I get very happy! It's like a hunt. Could I use software to do the same? Sure, but I really like the pursuit, and I always bid at the maximum that I'm willing to spend. It's all part of the game...IMHO ;)

Oh, and I DO get frustrated when I lose...a little. I just don't let it ruin my day. I just move on to the "next one". :D
