FOR SALE: Early Edison Fireside W/ Accessories -Inquire

Post by long_island_phono »

Here is a machine from my collection that I would like to make available to members of the forum as it is a special and unusual machine in my eyes and I can imagine others might view it along similar lines.

I acquired this machine from a lady in the midwest, probably in her late 60's, who claimed that this machine belonged to her great aunt and was passed down through the family. There were some clean contemporary 2 and 4-minute Edison black wax cylinders (from the '09/'10 period) with the machine along with odds and ends from the later years of cylinder production. From my perspective it looked as the though the machine was purchased new in '09 played for a year or two then stored away.

Apart from the early serial number and handpainted single line gilt pinstriping, I was intrigued by the two horns and upper horn crane rods. The crane is no doubt original and has the appropriate upper rod that was used for the two part Fireside horn however there is also a slightly longer rod sharing the exact same rod diameter, construction, plating and hanging chain, not to mention light oxidation.

Now, I am a young guy compared to most collectors- I turned 27 this year- and while I have been collecting since the late '90's most of the heavy research (and actual collecting of machines for that matter) I have done has been within the last 4 or so years. In that time I have not come across any mention of Gem/Fireside horn extention rods, so maybe it's simply my limited perspective? The slightly larger horn is a Tea Tray "Baked -On" horn, with a color combination I have only encountered/ seen on the gumwood Columbia BZ.

Apart from all that, the machine plays well, with a quiet motor. The only thing to note is the 4-minute stylus is chipped and I never have bothered to ship out the stylus bar for a replacement.

Us Edison cylinder collectors have a good idea on value for complete Firesides however given the various nuances of this unit I really cannot put a finger on a definite value so I'll leave that up to deliberation with any interested parties.
