Play it and hear whatever noise it has - but at $350, you won't be far off from a good deal.

That Amberola VI in the picture appears to be in nice shape. I paid more than $350 for mine. While condition generally should affect the price of a machine, you have to make certain allowances for that model. The Amberola V and VI are particularly noted for paint flaking from the bedplate, so if you want one of those models, bad paint often goes with it. Not all the VI's have noisy gears; mine does not. I have read that model came with a spare gear included. You should look to see if one is hidden inside the case. Motor noise is relative - I have a number of early and foreign disk machines that make more noise than my Amberola VI. Most of us can tolerate the noise once the music starts playing. Knowing about the rapid gear wear, I don't play my VI much, it is more of a display.
