Veteran's Day

Today, the eleventh, is known in the UK and Commonwealth as Armistice Day where we honour the soldiers, sailors and airmen who, like your brave boys, fought to overthrow the tyranny of Nazism in Europe, and subsequent wars.

Lest we forget.

I am honored to have numerous Veterans as a part of my life--- My closest phono buddy, Gene Cole was Army in WWII, my neighbor Wayne (Navy- WWII) and my brother-in-law, Jim, a Marine in Viet Nam. I am grateful for the many sacrifices made by our Veterans and their families.

I'm a retired special education teacher. When I was actively teaching I made sure Veteran's Day was recognized with appropriate and historically accurate information--- not revisionist history.

Today I am subbing in an elementary school in a D.C. suburb. I was pleasantly surprised to see that on their morning news show, they showed a lengthy video on the meaning of Veteran's Day. It included information from the Revolutionary War forward to the present day deployments in the Middle East with patriotic music playing in the background. The D.C. area is not known for it's patriotic expressions (isn't that ironic) so the inclusion of Veteran's Day info at this particular school was great!

It doesn't look like a U.S. uniform, but W.D. Andrews was a Victor jobber in Syracuse, New York. I believe Andrews bought out a business in Buffalo as well, but that would require some searching on my part.

Martin: how cool to have had grandfathers on both sides of WWI. I'm glad they both survived, and that you have images of them.

As long as others have posted photos of family veterans, here's my dad during WWII. He's still a Lieutenant, so I "think" it's WWII. When he was drafted during the Korean War, he was a Captain and served in Germany. Still, the foliage looks more like Germany than the Pacific, and the shadow of the building suggests a tile roof... I should have asked him when I had the chance.

I was out all day participating in the various Veteran's Day Activities. My Father and his brother, my uncle, were in the Army during WWII. My other 2 uncles were in the Navy, also during WWII. I served in the Navy from 1984-93. I was in the Persian Gulf during the Iraq-Iran war from 1987-88. I got injured during that deployment and was medically retired from the Navy. I especially like the Victor Patriotic Records catalog showing the Sailor and Soldier. I now know what I am going to hunt for. I want to thank the members of this Forum who served or had relatives that served.

Hey Harvey, thanks for the PM. Happy Vet's Day again! Seems we are of the same generation. I was in the Persian Gulf in the same period. Desert Shield/Storm from the first day til the last. 100+ days in a fighting hole and four days kicking up dust! Oh, the life of an 0311....

PS: It's funny, today always makes me think of my family past. I was the first male in my line going way back not wounded or killed in combat (Perhaps because I was the only Marine ). Dad in Vietnam, Grandfather in the 3rd Army, GGG at Belleau Wood, and all the way back to my first American ancestor who was sentenced to 'transportation' by the King for losing the Battle of Culloden in 1745.

Funny not to have actually emigrated to the US....We were deported here...

My dad was in the Navy during WWII: he served on the USS West Virginia, and was in Tokyo Bay when the surrender was signed. I still have an oil portrait my grandfather painted, showing Dad when he had graduated from officer training.

Dad would have been 95 by now: we lost him when I was 16.
