I'm going to be interested to see what prices are brought for several interesting machines in this auction. The Victor 8-35 is what interests me the most, but there are several others. http://www.stantons-auctions.com/auctio ... morephotos

I'll be more interested in what starts showing up afterward on ebay and at the next few shows.

Now here's an item one rarely finds for sale. Although, it appears to have lost most of it's gold finish....it's still a beauty.

Although the a lot of sought after items show up at these large auctions, many other items end up selling for very low prices. I wonder if these large auctions are hurting the prices of machines. In the past couple of years prices seem to be steadily declining and I'm wondering if these large sales are partially to blame. What are your feelings on this.

Yes, absolutely! For example, something similar in the antique firearms field is the Smith & Wesson Model 320 revolving rifle. They are uncommon, less than 1,000 being produced. But, the price of these has been hurt, because a large collection of these has been sold off recently, and there are just not enough folks with an interest in these with deep pockets to absorb all that recently came up for sale. Large sales such as Stanton's = a glut of machines and the more common stuff goes rather cheaply. Also, notice many folks without grey hair in this hobby lately?rgordon939 wrote:Although the a lot of sought after items show up at these large auctions, many other items end up selling for very low prices. I would think a small potential market for phonographs and a stagnant economy are bigger culprits. Wouldn't these larger gatherings be the place to get harder to find machines?rgordon939 wrote:Although the a lot of sought after items show up at these large auctions, many other items end up selling for very low prices. Personally I hate auctions as they are too rife wih shills, fees, and usually artificially high prices. Well, at least that has been my experience in the car market.

As far as us gray hairs, well, part of that could be cost of machines as well. That and exposure to the hobby. With that said however, neither of my sons show any interest. Old cars, yes, old phonos, no.

With the rise of new middle class in China, believe me, there'll be having a constant demand for those low end phonographs or even high end and its relates as long as these auction houses provide international shipping as reasonable cost.
