Paul, you can also use a self-made adapter cable that you connect between the TT and the pre-amp to switch to vertical cut. Your TT should have two RCA output jacks which represent the four prongs on the cartridge. That way you don't have to lay your hands on the TT itself.
And if you just want to record your records with your computer, you'll be fine by doing this
digitally.
I also prefer the Stanton 500 cartridge where the styli are way tougher than the Shure ones. I also have a Shure M78S and virtually stopped using it after accidentally bending two expensive styli while switching them.
