I have no idea if this is a good price or not but the machine looks pretty good. Any thoughts?

$175 is a steal for this type of Victrola. I have seen various machines like this with higher prices. Some in poor condition.
My only quibble is the Decca record does not belong with this machine. Decca is a latter label from the 19'30's and 1940's. This should have a VICTOR record pre 1935. Preferably the teens or 20's.

I'll give him a call today. Anything in particular to look for when I check it out? Should there be record cases behind the side doors? How do you tell which Victor records paly on this machine?

First have a good look at the cabinet and try to find any flaws. Was it refinished? The reproducer might look OK, but when was it rebuilt? It will play any 78 record, but will require replacement needles to prevent record damage. It's not unusual that the record storage albums would be missing and they are not hard to find. Was the motor serviced at any point? How does it sound? It's rare to find a flawless machine so you won't be surprised to find some flaws. The great thing about the listing is when you go to see it, you might be able to negotiate an even better price. It's pretty reasonable already. Finally, check out the Victrola data base to obtain more information about the production numbers and some details. http://www.victor-victrola.com/ Good luck.BwanaJoe wrote:I'll give him a call today. Not a great deal, price wise. This is an early model, before the folded horn was fitted so it will have a poor bass response. Also, the cabinet looks more pale than it should. Someone might have refinished it. It might be the quality of the pics. The ad claims that the cabinet is oak however it was only available in mahogany My theory is that someone might have tried to make it look oak.

The craigslist ad says oak but I believe it's a stripped mahogany cabinet. For myself and many other collectors, a table model or upright Victrola has more interest than a console machine. If it pleases you, that all that matters. Jerry

One of the uprights would be cooler, but, I just really want something to play 78s on that sounds good. I thought about an adaptor for my 19 but consensus was all but the straight ones either don't work well or sound bad. And Ive yet to see on of the straight arm adaptors for sale.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding a nice upright in your area. How far are you from the Orlando show? I think you'll find competitive prices at the phono shows. I set up at a couple of long distance shows away from Oregon. I generally don't take large machines and I think other sellers are reluctant. Because of that, you might advertise your wants before going. Good luck in your search. Jerry B.

It is fairly close. But I don't see how I could snag a nice upright at the show inexpensively.

You'd be surprised what big things will sell for at the end of a show so sellers don't have to return with them. Of course that's why I don't take them to a show unless they are pre sold. If you're purely a bargain hunter (no criticism intended), stick to craigslist. Jerry
