Vintage Technologies,
Thanks for the information. I also have an Edison Hepplewood phonograph. So, you're saying that there are adapters for the Edison phonograph to play Pathé records? If so, could you provide a photo? I tried sliding the weight on the arm to the back and still had the same tracking problem. Any ideas on how to lighten the mass of the Ultona head? Thanks!!

By the way, either your pics are not very clear or your Sapphire looks damaged. It should be a nice smooth ball.

Vintage Technologies,
Thanks for the wealth of information about the possible problem. So, you're saying that there is an adapter of playing Pathé records with a sapphire needle on an Edison DD phonograph? If so, please send me a photo. I'd like to try playing the Pathé records on my Edison Hepplewood phonograph. I've tried sliding the weight on the arm all of the way back but still have the same tracking problem. Any ideas on how to lighten the mass of the Ultona head? Thanks!! Adolfo

Gramaphone78,
There seems to be a smooth sapphire ball at the tip of the needle but it's hard to tell. I may end up getting an exchange for another needle just to rule out the possibility of having a damaged one. Thanks!!

I have never seen a reproducer play vertically like how you show with an angle. These reproducers chucks can be rotated in order to achieve a proper "linear" position required to play vertical records correctly. I believe you rotate the whole outer ring/chuck assembly.
Here is a video of the same Brunswick head in the correct head-on (linear tracking) position.
https://youtu.be/RBDuwuf16bA
You will also note the person playing the Brunswick, rotates the outer reproducer ring and needle chuck assembly in order to achieve the correct angle when he switches to lateral play.
Remember to rotate the lateral chuck again back to the correct angle prior to playing that format...
.
I think you will have a winner after this adjustment.

Here are pictures of the Fletcher reproducer that I use on my Edison phonograph.
There is nothing you can do to reduce the mass of the Brunswick reproducer. Counterbalancing the reproducer weight is not the same as reducing the mass.
There are only two more things that I can suggest:
1. Be sure there is no resistance in the tonearm pivot.
2. Try an original stylus.

I think it's best to post a pic of how his reproducer is sitting while in play. The ring I circled in yellow needs to be rotated in order for the stylus to be where the yellow arrow is. Also, the reproducer body appears to be slightly twisted to the right. It should be in a level position. However, this angle may just be an illusion from your video.

Re: Pathé records won't advance, they repeat
ok here are some pics of how the ultona 2 way needs to work to play Pathé's
(above) the ultona in its normal position (above) the ultona in the wrong Pathé position
sometimes it gets stuk in the norm position it then will turn bit it won't line up causing skips and bad sound (most ultona's tent to get stuck this way) (above) the ultona in the correct Pathé position
(above) if stuck in the norm 78 position then you need to lubricate under the ring held by the 2 screws under the mica diaphragm usually that means rebuilding the reproducer completely cleaning everything and lube where needed (moving parts and such)
i hope this helps

It is NOT in the correct position. Turn it FORWARD and pull it all the way OUT. Tino's pics are worng - pull it out.
