Amberola 60

Here's one you don't see very often:



Amberola 60 produced in late 1926, estimate is that only around 100 were produced. Mostly for export. This one is
serial # 1040, fewer than a dozen are known to exist.

The mechanism is a double spring Amberola 50/75, cabinet is a London #1 DD in mahogany, about 4" larger all around than the Amberola 50 cabinet

Reproducer is a Diamond "D", nickel plated pot metal.



The 3 holes in the weight are the attachment points for the extra weight that was used on some Diamond "D"
reproducers

The grill is homemade, it isn't a bad job but whoever made it copied the wrong design. This circle
pattern was used on the London #3 model, not the London #1. I'm looking for the correct grill or a good tracing
to have one made.

I don't think anyone at the auction knew what it was, it sold cheap.

I was in Peoria, Ill about 20 years ago and there happened to be an auction with a few phonographs listed in the sale bill (back when the Antique Trader was about all there was to go by for such things) and there was a poor picture of an Amberola machine and the auctioneer had it listed as an Amberola 60. It was in reality just an Amberola 50 and two people drove a long way to be at the sale because of that machine. They had apparently called the auctioneer and he "confirmed" it was a 60 and boy did they get into an argument with him before the sale began. They got the police called on them and were removed from the sale. I bought a whole bunch of Blue Amberols cheap on that sale. I don't recall now why I didn't bid on the machine, but there must have been some reason.

Congratulations on your find. Edison sure made some obscure machines in those transitional years.

I think I sat in front of you at this auction. Rare as all get out, but I just don't find it a good looking machine. I was surprised it went that low, but glad it went to someone who appreciates it.

I think Gramp's Treasures can make you the correct grille with just a decent photograph and accurate measurements And boy do I HATE POT METAL UGH

The London #1 was mostly an export machine, so you might have luck contacting British or European collectors for some good photos of the grille.
