VV-XVII Japanese Finish

If anyone is seriously thinking about this, I may be able to "house" it till the Wayne or Union show (this would give me a great excuse to go again ) The machineis not to far from my home, and I am thinking about checking it out,just to get a closer look if nothing else.

There is one on the Mr Victor web site (Bob Johnson) that is the same as this one. So either this is that same machine or they were painted this way with the different design on the top doors. Here is the link http://www.mrvictor.com/phono_collectio ... Chipendale

The CL machine is clearly identified as a XVII, while Bob's example is listed as a 130; so I think they might not be the same.

(Now, if only Bob had included a photo of the ID plate...)

I bought one 2 years ago and posted here about it. Mine have that different uneven design on the top door as well.

It sure looks wonderful and 100% original to me. It's clearly an earlier VV-XVII (placement of the needle cup holder) in Oriental lacquer design. According to LFD, this finish was also available on the later VV-130 as shown on Bob's site.

As Dan said...too bad we are not on that end on of the country... .

I assume the seller received an appraisal from the Victrola website.

I went to the Craigslist ad, and looked at the photos... this one caught my eye: this machine was sold by "Columbia Hall", at 316 Lackawanna Avenue, Scranton, which later became "Scranton Talking Machine Co.", and later, "Scranton Talk", which was in business into the 1970's, selling furniture. Sadly, the building is gone, replaced by a modern office bldg.

A few years ago, I acquired a nice Columbia "Leader" upright, bearing the "Columbia Hall, Scranton" decal on the lid, below the Columbia decal.

I can't make-out the name on the invoice, but the address looks like 1001 Euclid Avenue... this would be on large hill in Scranton's West Side, overlooking the Lackawanna Railroad's West-bound mainline to Buffalo, NY, as well as most of northern Scranton. It would have overlooked several Anthracite Collieries, and had a few more behind it. If I get a chance, I will check-out the address... I would expect to find a substantial home there....
