I've recently posted 5 different Victrola motors on eBay. 2 of them are rebuilt including new main springs, the other 3 were 'reconditioned' (cleaned, regreased, adjusted, tuned up) and retain their original springs, in good condition. View them here:

I've added yet another Victrola motor, this time a 3 spring motor c.1912. I haven't done anything to this motor except oil and grease the moving parts. Everything else seems to be in great shape!

This is a shameless plug for Cliff and his work on motors. He has done all my motor work since I started collecting phonos, which has been a couple of years. He has done excellent work for me at very reasonable rates. I might point out that you will save money buying his motors. Not only do you save postage buying one of his motors listed on eBay (if you send a motor out for repair, you have to pay postage both ways - but only pay for postage one way for an eBay purchase) but you also still have your old motor, for parts, trade or future use.

Just posted another motor and motor board to eBay, a 3 spring Victrola motor from 1914-1917 from a VV-XVI. You can see it here:

The motor board measures 12 ½" x 12 ½". I removed the springs, cleaned and regreased them, and tuned up the motor, and adjusted the speed indicator.

I just came across this forum as I've been looking for information on victrola repair. I've had a VV-XVI series C that I bought at an estate sale about 10 years ago, and this is the first time I've had trouble with it. The motor seems sluggish and too weak to play records, and also makes some rapid tat-tat-tat sounds when first starting.

I'd like to send it out for repairs, but am wondering if the VV-XVI motor from above would work as well? Are there things I would need to check on my machine to see if it would be compatible? It would be great to have a second motor and board sets so that I could still use one while the other is being repaired. Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated. It appears that both the speed control and stopping mechanism are different, but I'm not sure if they have to be the same for me to use it in my machine.

Edited to add that after some googling and a helpful PM, I got the courage to take the board out and see what my motor looked like. The board is smaller (12x12) and the motor is also smaller (looks like 2 canisters stuck together) so I don't think the motor here will work. I am going to attempt some simple regreasing (not of the main springs) on my own and see if I can fix it myself.

Welcome to the forum. From the symptoms you describe I don't think that you need to replace the motor. If you post a question with a few pictures in the Tips and Tricks section other forum members can give you advice on how to resolve your problem. The sluggishness is probably caused by 100 years old hardened grease and the tat-tat-tat sounds point to some issue with the governor. But without detailed pictures it is more guesswork.
