As I noted in the listing, the horn came from an early Edison Home or Edison Spring Motor phonograph. The machine might well have had a European style horn originally, as you say.

I get a distinct "Ansonia Connecticut Clockmaker of German Extraction" vibe here. From the construction of the wooden reproducer I would not be suprised if the machine was used with hearing tubes, as were most of the earliest Graphophones.

I too scrutinized this machine at the auction. Being a machinist I can say this machine was built with attention to detail with appropriate manufacturing protocols. It was not made by a novice. Anyone who buys this machine will have a very cool addition to their collection. It would cost thousands and thousands of dollars to replicate this piece. Good luck Grant!I hope you hit a home run!

A fascinating labor of love!

I wonder whether there are any inscriptions in it that might reveal the identity of the builder, and perhaps a date of construction..
