It just occurred to me the reason might be to cover up - or "replace" (in the person's mind) - an existing or missing decal.
That suggests there could be a clue to the identity of the original donor cabinet under the errant dataplate.

I was just reading Curt's response in this thread, and noticed my last post in response to yours.
I think I may have come off looking a little bit (or maybe a LOT bit) like an ass.
I didn't mean "Absolutely!" in the way as to imply they came this way from the factory; but in the way that I've come across some bastardized units this way, obviously after someone has botched one of those "restorations" we see all-to-frequently.
I hope you didn't take offense. I wasn't yelling like a fool, but it kind of looks that way in my post.

It's difficult for me to get my point across without sounding like an idiot sometimes.
