Most people don't know brass from gold plating, (which of course the brass ones have too). They see yellow, they think brass. Lots of oblivious people these days. Just try buying a buggy whip holder at your local hardware store these days. Ugh.

Re: Ebay Sellers Need to Check Their Information!
That reproducer which is fitted to an HMV tone arm came off of a machine that I built for the late Charles Gregory a some years ago. Sort of a poor man's EMG. I offerred to buy it from his daughter, bypput she apparently saw dollar signs and held out for more, and then got about a third of my offer. I was probably the only person to which that machine would have been worth a plugged nickle. Oh, well!

As a similar example, I was driving my 1912 Overland through the City of Detroit a few years ago. It has a brass radiator, brass headlights and brass windshield frame. A guy standing on the street corner said, "Man, this car is solid gold!". He also suggested that I get some "20's" for it, (that's 20" rims in Motown talk). I tried to tell him it's got 25's on it right now.JerryVan wrote:Most people don't know brass from gold plating, (which of course the brass ones have too). They see yellow, they think brass. I drove a Flivver (a black 1927 Model T coupe) for many years. So many times a fellow would tell me that his father, or grandfather, or uncle drove a car "just like it." Of course the car that was "just like" the Flivver had four doors, and was a Chevrolet, and was made in 1953...JerryVan wrote:As a similar example, I was driving my 1912 Overland through the City of Detroit a few years ago. B: One picture is the back of such a reproducer.
C: The other picture is the back of a TOTALLY DIFFERENT reproducer.
D: What the Heck ???

Clearly pot metal. However what is the purpose of these kinds of posts anyway? Not sure, it may be good to drop a person a correction, or line, nicely, and if they say go take a flying leap then that is that. Sometimes people don't know, and they will thank you for it. Some know exactly what they are doing. Other than that I don't see the point. I see many times when a legitimate question, or subject pops up, most of them go ignored. Some subjects perhaps are taboo? Don't know. I am not in the same class as most here. I am NOT a collector. The talking machine to me is a fascinating mechanical, scientific instrument, and good entertainment. I do not care about value or rarity, I like it to perform well, and to re-create some of the technology, for no other reason than curiosity.

More like eBay buyers need to know what they're bidding on.
