Edison H-19's: Nickel Plated, Gold Plated, or both?

Hi folks,

In reply to an earlier post in eBay & Craigslist Alert forum (an H 19 in the UK with LP gearing installed, here: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 14&t=24670), I noticed the H 19 listed had all gold plated hardware throughout. I quickly consulted my Frow guide, and he states that they were assembled with NICKEL plated parts.

I was thinking perhaps the UK eBay listed H 19 was an oddity, but later this morning I came across an H 19 listed on Craigslist in Charlotte NC; ALSO with gold plated hardware.

Perhaps this specific H 19 description in Frow's is incorrect?

The question begs to be asked: was the gold plating specific to the earlier version of the model fitted with the "fluers-de-lis" grille, and then changed to less expensive nickel plated components with the advent of the less ornate (and seemingly more common) "shield" type grille?

Neither machine has their grilles present; this might suggest (to me at least) the grilles were indeed the more delicate and easily destroyed "fluers-de-lis" type.

Years ago i also had a Hepplewhite, oak case, fluers-de-lis grill and gold hardware. In fact, I'm not sure I've seen a nickel one.

I have 3 H-19s in the "bone yard," and they all have gold hardware. (One in mahogany, 2 in oak.)

Sounds like there's an inaccuracy on the Frow book on this point then.

I've read, and reread his description to be sure it isn't just me misunderstanding. It would appear that Frow was wrong in this case.

Well, for all its virtues, it's not the first time an inaccuracy has been seen in Frow's work. Even a 98% record of accuracy (an arbitrary number on my part) means that 2% of the work is in error.

It's always a good idea to read anyone's work with a open mind. Just because it's in print doesn't necessarily mean it's true (except on the Internet, of course!).

I know it's a different model, but I owned an S-19 DD player (my first Edison machine!), which had gold hardware, however I believe the reproducer with it was bright nickel. Cabinet was mahogany.

To this date, it was still the best-sounding DD player I have owned, even against my two C-19 machines.
