These are called "vertically challenged" Edisons. It always amazes me when ignorant sellers focus on the "No. 19 cabinet factory" sticker rather than the maker's plate that has the real information. hey! I just thought of something. I always thought that the No. 19 cabinet factory meant that this cabinet was made by the 19th cabinet factory. But since I just realized that this is a C-19 phonograph, could the No. 19 be referring to the model of phonograph rather than the name of the cabinet factory?

Well, considering that my BC-34 from 1922 has a label from "No. 18 Cabinet Factory", I would not read too much into that coincidence.

I conducted a survey related to the "Cabinet Factory No." tags found on Chippendales, and later it was expanded to include several other noted models.

This is a link to the last page of the post, with the tallied data I recorded. http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... 60#p134560. The tags I have highlighted in RED only signifies very late serialized tags; which was the original intent of my survey.

As you can see illustrated by the rest of the recorded data, the "Cabinet Factory No." does not indicate the cabinet model number in my opinion.

Why do we even talk about these things?

If a cabinet is so badly damaged by, let's say a flood, and you happen to be a master carpenter, say like Gramps Treasures, is it all that terrible to do this if one does it in a decent way with moldings, trim, etc? Or just gut what's left for parts? Just saying...... No real opinion here, just saying.....

What primarily concerns me is the possibility of good machines being destroyed forever.

Outside of legitimately damaged ones being cut up or even parted out, there's little any of us can do to change that, or arguably should. Parts used to preserve other machines is certainly a noble consideration.

After those two considerations my concern then becomes one of misrepresentation to the unwary, at which time I think the right thing to do is openly expose such.
