I just came across a very nice looking Victor single spring direct drive motor and motor board. After a bit of research, I've come to the conclusion that this motor is not original to the motor board. At first, I thought it was for a Victrola IV, but a 10" turntable is too big. Then a Victor I, but I think that had a bevel motor.
Is this a later motor stuck on a VIC I motor board?
I don't often see the early VIC motors so I don't really know what I've got.
Thanks! Cliff

Re: Wrong Motor?
It's a Victor I motor (and board?) from the model that used an 8" turntable with beveled underside.
The position of the catch is different, and I can't quite tell if your board has filled holes. If so, that speaks for itself.

Thanks! Great picture! Glad to know the board is from a VIC I.phonogfp wrote:It's a Victor I motor (and board?) from the model that used an 8" turntable with beveled underside.![]()

My motor has the quad cut spiral on the spindle, a little later than the double cut on yours. The hinges seem to be on the wrong side in relation to the lid 'catch'. Also, there is an extra hole in the motor board, looks like it was once a hole for a motor screw. There also appears to be holes for the hinge screws on the side opposite the lid 'catch'.

Yes, the motor castings differ too, but the brake is the same. Yours might possibly be for a Z, although the hinge locations have clearly been changed. I'm sure someone could use it.

Re: Wrong Motor?
Something looks really messed up. Aside from lots of extra, filled holes, it also looks like the hinges have been moved. Notice how they're on the side adjacent to the latch, instead of on the side directly across from the latch.

Looks like a Victrola IV motor retro fitted to a Victor motor board.

Re: Wrong Motor?
Quite possibly. The motors of the Victor I, Z, O, and Victrola IV were quite similar. Check out photo 5(E) and descriptions of motors Types EM and D:Phonolair wrote:Looks like a Victrola IV motor retro fitted to a Victor motor board.

Re: Wrong Motor?
I've got a couple VV-IV phonos with this same motor, that's why I originally thought this was for a VV-IV, but the smaller motor board confused me. Now I'm inclined to think it is as mentioned above, the marriage of an early VV-IV motor with a Victor I motor board.
Should probably separate the two, just for the sake of posterity...

Re: Wrong Motor?
Cliff, can you show a picture of the crank location? If it is up near the motor board, then is for an early Victor I, Z, or O. If the crank is slotted, that is an early motor. If the crank location is lower, then the motor is for a late Victor I, O, or a Victrola IV.

Re: Wrong Motor?
Hi, Harvey. This is a direct crank, the spring barrel shaft is the crank shaft. It is threaded and requires a 5/16" female crank.Phonofreak wrote:Cliff, can you show a picture of the crank location?
