Puritan Phonograph Grill Removal

Post by rodpickett »

I have been contacted by someone attempting to remove the grill from a Puritan upright, for cleaning. I advised her to lift-up and pull-out, similar to an Edison grill. So far, that hasn't worked, although it does have some movement. She can see (and feel with a credit-card) a pin in the upper portion, center.

Does anyone have any experience with the Puritan? Grill removal?

Is this "pin" original or perhaps a nail someone has added to keep the grill in-place?

thanks,

Rod

If this is the same as my Puritan, the grill can be removed by pulling forward on the top of the grill. The pin or small button is spring loaded like on some Victrola doors.

Thanks for the great advice. They were successful. I didn't know about the spring-loaded button on the Puritan.

The lady is very happy now that she can clean the dust.

One must be very carefull with grille removal. they are fragile pieces with delicate hundred year old veneer that is often ready to start flaking off. Some grilles, such as the Edisonic Beethoven are screwed in on the front and on the top inside of the cabinet. And if you try to remove the grille on a Beethoven without first removing the motor board frame, you could easily break the grille and rip the grille cloth! So don't think that all grilles are the lift up and out variety! Marc.
