Wax finish problem
While cleaning a DD record I made the mistake of dropping a cotton ball of with alcohol on my Edison L-19. This machine has a wax like finish and there is now a patch of untreated wood on the front of the machine
Is there any way I can match the color with the rest of my machine using some sort of wax or something? I tried using stain but the spot won't accept it.

Re: Wax finish problem
The spot will probably accept an alcohol based stain (powdered stain dissolved in alcohol).

Have you tried a colored wax or wax shoe polish?

Hello,
Sorry for such a long reply. I did try using colored wax but the results were unsatisfactory. I plan on going the alcohol based stain way but am having trouble finding a good dye. I was thinking about getting a dye from this place: http://woodworker.com/alcohol-soluble-b ... aQodXAMEYw and going with dark brown walnut. What do you guys think?

Re: Wax finish problem
The problem with the alcohol based dyes is, they aren't very colorfast. It will start out ok and in a few years fade to something else. And the water dyes are really hard to use over an existing finish. Is your machine that really dark brown color? It might be easier to match with some artists oil. At least with that, it's easy to wipe off and start over until you get it the way you want it. It is slow to dry though. You can add a little bit of japan to it to get it to dry faster once you get a color you are happy with. Those kinds of repairs are really hard to do, that's for sure.

I took a furniture touch up class from Mohawk and the best lesson I learned is that this is difficult to do without a lot of practice. That being said, you might consider calling a pro to touch it up for you. If your local yellow pages do no show a shop, call a good furniture store in your area and ask to speak to their touch up person.
