Hi,
I have an Edison Standard currently, that has the spring broken, a couple of inches from the center. For some reasson, I can't get the center broken part off the winding shaft. Is there any trick to un hooking it from the winding shaft?

Stick a flat head screwdriver in to open the coil a bit. You have to separate it enough to release the hole in the spring from the rivet.

Bob gives good advice. While gently prying the end of the mainspring away from the arbor, back it off slightly - opposite the way it pulls - so the rivet can pop out of the large end of the hole.
